4 May 2010

Fish Hoek AC, you do it with five stars.   I have no doubt Lindsay would be pleased!

Stated on the “Ethos of the Run” page on our website is the following:

This run is our club’s acknowledgement, recognition and support of the time, effort and commitment of each Comrades runner in his/her preparation for the big event.

The run is intended to be a DRESS REHEARSAL for Comrades.  Race day conditions are simulated as best as possible with full seconding tables every 3km.

The support crews are all PROUDLY FISH HOEK and pride themselves on providing the best possible support and care for all the runners along the route.

I think we got it right!

The 4 Hills for Lindsay is over!  A huge thank you from me to everyone who assisted in making this run the success that it was/is.  I continue to be blown away by the effort and enthusiasm that is put into this run by everyone concerned.  There were many happy faces during and after this run.

The response was incredible!  41 clubs were represented.  We reached our quota of 350 runners on 20 February!  Thereafter I started a “Waiting List” and I am pleased to say that participants were very good in informing me if their circumstances had changed.  This allowed me to move runners from the waiting list to the participation list.  On the day, runners bought into the programme.  With no cut offs or medals to be missed, runners were a lot more relaxed.  There were a few minor incidents of littering and irresponsible running (traffic).  Let’s aim for 100% next year!  Thanks to those runners who assisted by picking up the odd sachet that was dropped.  Let’s keep this run SPECIAL!

The coordination of the refreshment tables was (as always) handled expertly by Kathy Cronje.  She put together a crack team for the day.  18 support teams in all, which meant that each team was only responsible for one refreshment table.  The supplies were kept ice cold thanks to Komicx who provided us with 36 crates of chipped ice.  Thanks to Alan Haupt, Mike Gleeson and Dawie O’Neill for collecting and distributing the ice!  The runners on the route were managed by Kim Jenkinson-Wright.  She ensured runner safety on route and kept the refreshment tables in the picture as to who the last runners were.  Thanks to Karen Thornton, Cheryl Bucklow, Martin Rohland, Heather and Andy Campbell for sourcing and collecting the supplies.  Thanks to Rhona Cammell for “distributing” the supplies on Friday evening.

Registration went off without a hitch.  Thanks to Anna and Dawie O’Neill, Karen Thornton, Heather and Shannon Campbell, Denys Stroebel and Kim J-Wright.

A huge thank you to the Support teams (please let me know if I’ve missed anyone!):

Nic Kasfikis, Alan and Serena Haupt
Peter Schutte, Jack and Jean Cammidge

Runners were treated to a choice of 3 delicious homemade soups at the finish as well as tea and coffee.  Thanks to our resident chef, Bridget van Eck who made enough soup (120 litres) to feed the masses after the long run.  She was helped by her parents Pam and Ken Laughton and Serena Haupt in the kitchen.

It was wonderful to hear the bell ringing in Lindsay’s honour throughout the morning/afternoon as runners finished their runs.

We were blessed with wonderful weather which allowed participants to relax outside and enjoy the ‘runners high’, and sip delicious homemade soup and/or ice cold beer!  The overall vibe was so positive.

Reading through all the thank you letters, almost every one mentions the fantastic support and feeling of general caring at every station.  Again, this falls into the ethos of this run.

In closing, let me wish you all the very best for Comrades.  Take with you the positivity and goodwill of the Lindsay run and tap into it during the trying times on 30 May.

I love you all
